Livestock Department Lines of Business
The Marshall Young Insurance Livestock Department offers mono-line “limited mortality” coverage for nearly all types of livestock and poultry. Our business focus is providing insurance for the animals in agricultural livestock production operations, as well as providing coverage for those involved in the transporting and marketing of livestock. In addition, we offer “full mortality” coverage for horses and many other animal species. Following are the lines of business that the Livestock Department writes along with a brief description of each type of coverage.
Mortality Coverage
For Horses, Cattle, Bison, Elk, Alpacas/Llamas, Dogs, Pigs, Sheep, Goats
Provides “Full Mortality” insurance coverage for individual animals in case of death from any accidental or natural cause. Coverage options are available for Emergency Colic Surgery, Major Medical, and Surgical Expense. Agreed values are established at policy inception based on information provided by the insured, pending approval from the underwriter. “Limited Mortality” coverage can also be purchased to insure individual animals against named perils only. “Single Trip Transit” policies are also available to provide coverage during shipment, though the owner of the animal, not the transporter, must purchase the policy. The minimum annual premium for any mortality policy is $250. Veterinary examinations or statements of health, available on the website, must accompany applications for most animals.*
Cattle
For Dairy Cattle, Feedlot Cattle, Pasture Cattle, Veal Calves, Buffalo, Bison
Provides “death only” limited named perils coverage for the following perils: fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, explosion, accidental shooting, drowning, electrocution, wild animal attack, building collapse, vandalism, theft, etc. for cattle at listed locations. Additional Coverage Options are available for Contaminated Feed (except for pasture animals), Livestock Born at Listed Locations, and higher valued livestock. Standard policy limits are available up to $5,000,000 per occurrence, $1200 per head for beef cattle, and $2500 per head for dairy cattle. Higher limits can be purchased up to a maximum of $10,000,000 per occurrence and $5000 for any one animal. Reinsurance quotes may be available for policy limits above $10,000,000 per occurrence. Losses are settled based on the actual “current market value” at the time of loss. The minimum deductible is $500 per occurrence and the minimum annual premium is $250 (fully earned).*

Additional Coverage Options are available for Power Interruption and Mechanical Breakdown (suffocation), Business Interruption, Contaminated Feed, Reproductive Impairment, and Contract Penalties. The insured has the choice of using “current market value” loss determination or establishing per head Agreed Values. Policy limits are available up to $10,000,000 per occurrence. Reinsurance quotes may be available for higher limits. The minimum deductible is $1000 per occurrence and the minimum annual premium is $1000 (fully earned).*
Livestock Cargo
For Cattle, Hogs, Sheep, Goats and Poultry
Provides limited named perils coverage for the following perils: fire, lightning, explosion, collision of the carrying vehicle, overturn or upset of the carrying vehicle, collapse of bridge or roadway, windstorm, flood, theft of the entire shipment, etc. Coverage is extended to pay for earned freight to the point of the accident, reasonable roundup expenses and removal of dead livestock. Livestock are insured for “death, crippling, and straying” as a result of a covered peril. There is not a per occurrence limit listed on the policy, as coverage is provided for the “current market value” up to full invoice value of the load. The standard per head limits are $1200 any one animal and $750 for horses (“death only” at the scene) and losses are settled based on the “current market value” for slaughter, feeder, or stocker (breeding replacement) purposes. Increased per head limits can be purchased. The policy also has a $2500 Carcass Removal limit per occurrence for the removal of dead livestock. There is “no deductible” on this policy and the minimum annual premium is $250 (fully earned).*
Non-Livestock Agricultural Commodities Cargo
For grain, hay, livestock feed, seed and potatoes, etc.
